The EQ-i 2.0 – measuring and developing Emotional Intelligence

Exciting news from AtWork: we are now established and fully accredited to deliver the fantastic new Emotional Intelligence profile tool - the EQ-i 2.0.

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain social relationships, cope with challenges, and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way.

While Emotional Intelligence isn’t the sole predictor of human performance and development potential, it is proven to be a key indicator. EI is not static – your EI changes over time and can be developed in targeted areas.

EI is a critical capability set for leaders, and leadership development and recruiting is one of the key applications.

Why the EQ-i 2.0®?

The EQ-i 2.0 measures EI and how it can impact people and the workplace. Applications of EI include:

  • Leadership Development
  • Selection
  • Executive Coaching
  • Team Building
  • Organisational Development

The EQ-i 2.0 Model

The 1-5-15 factor structure of the EQ-i 2.0 features one overarching EI score (Total EI), consisting of five composite scores which break into a total of 15 subscales.

The EQ-i 2.0 Experience

One of the very reassuring facts with the EQ-i system is that this is now the 2nd generation of this highly-researched tool. Where other EI instruments are still in developmental stages or have not gained traction, the EQ-i is already successfully used around the world, and now comes in a new model, with new reports, and an accessible user-friendly web platform.

The EQ-i 2.0 builds on EQ-i. It introduces some differences that stem from changes (based on extensive feedback) to assessment items, updated norms, and rigorous reliability and validity studies. It is normed against a sample of 4000 participants.

Reports

Reports use a very effective new colour coding format, clear layout and language that speaks very directly to both you as an end-user and us as your coach and consultant. There’s both an individual and a 360° version of the EQ-i 2.0 report available.

360° version

The 360° is a useful profile tool for either an individual development platform, or for working with teams that are intent on building high-performance capability. A 360° team approach is not for the faint-hearted and requires careful consideration prior to use – we will support you with analysing your needs and the best approach to suit your environment.

Team Management Profile (TMP)

Understanding how we operate in a team, particularly as a manager, has a major impact on how effective we are at work. Without such insight we may never recognise, let alone achieve, the development path we need to follow. The TMP provides this insight. Features include:

  • Report describes your personal management style as demonstrated in your current role
  • Self-completion online in around 15 minutes
  • Access to materials that provide opportunities to:
    • Understand your style – strengths and challenges
    • Appreciate diversity of styles
    • Recognise in a very practical way how it ‘takes all types’
    • Enable the establishment of directions and strategies for a ‘career journey’ based on a preferred management style to match environment and organisational needs

The TMP platform brings together personality preferences and work preferences.

TMP was developed in Australia now used successfully worldwide. It’s a fantastic basis for individual or team development. TMP is more appropriate than many personality-based approaches as it is built around the roles people take on at work. Based around a functional work wheel model, it can also double as a useful project management tool.

Most people recognise their preferred roles and can apply the concepts directly to workplace needs and issues. They can learn how to be more effective self-managers, and how to work with others. This is how managers and leaders GET RESULTS!

The individualised report shows the major preferred role and two secondary roles. It outlines strengths (including leadership), decision-making style, inter-personal skills, team style, self-assessment challenges, and how to be more effective - including a brief description on working more effectively with individuals on other parts of the wheel – also known as ‘linking’.

The 360° leadership Team Management Profile – The Linking Skills Profile

Linking Skills as described in the TMP are assessed for an individual manager using the Linking Skills 360° – also an AtWork tool. Great in particular for team leaders and managers developing frontline management skills.

Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ)

Transformational leadership can be encapsulated as a leadership approach that causes positive change in individuals and social systems. The approach incorporates the MLQ 360° instrument capturing impressions of an individual’s management impact from multiple perspectives – self, supervisor, peers, direct reports, and optionally an ‘other’ group. Features include:

  • Online questionnaire completion with simple click from email access for all raters
  • Highly informative leadership model based on Transformational and Transactional Leadership styles (and passive/avoidant style)
  • Clear links between leadership behaviours and outcomes – in terms of effort, effectiveness and satisfaction of followers
  • Identification of the underuse of productive transformational leadership behaviours such as:
    • Building Trust,
    • Acting with Integrity
    • Inspiring Others
    • Encouraging Innovative Thinking
    • Coaching
    • The appropriateness of the frequency of relatively productive transactional behaviours
  • Identification of the overuse of such non-optimal transactional or avoidant behaviours as micro-management, ‘fighting fires’, laissez-faire responsibility avoidance, etc.

The MLQ is based around the original research of Bass and Avolio (1985-90), developing and documenting the concepts of Transformational Leadership. It’s now seen as one of the most powerful and impactful models of leadership in use in leading organisations around the world today.

30 years of research and meta-analyses have shown that transformational and transactional leadership positively predicts a wide variety of performance outcomes including individual, group and organisational level variables.

The beauty of the MLQ approach is that through building a customised Leadership Development Plan, leaders are given a specific behavioural approach to developing the right mix of transformational and transactional leadership, customised to their own working environment, peers and team.

It is transformational, and its aim is encourage and enable optimal performance from individuals at all levels in the organisation. Through leadership beyond expectations… comes performance beyond expectations. The MLQ shows how.

The EQ-I 2.0, the TMP and the MLQ are just a sample of the best, highly effective profiling instruments and psychometrics that we offer.

Tests also available to identify verbal, numerical, analytical and strategic skills, and an extensive range of other work-related skills.

Of course we also offer the MBTI – one of the originals and greats!
